Three nearby projects: a DC rowhouse bath and two McLean rooms

We have not published an Arlington project story yet. Until we do, here are three finished jobs close by, each told in full on its own page.

Hall bathroom remodeling in Washington, DC: a maple vanity with brass sconces beside a tub in white herringbone tile
Hall bath · Washington, DC

A Foxhall Village rowhouse bath, rebuilt from the joists

The hallway linen closet next door became part of the bathroom, and a maple linen tower now stands where it was. The old steam radiator gave way to an electric heated floor under black hex tile, and white herringbone runs up to the ceiling around the tub.

Kitchen remodeling in McLean, VA: a walnut island with a quartzite top facing a white rangetop wall and hood
Walnut kitchen · McLean, VA

A McLean kitchen opened up on engineered beams

A closed cherry kitchen lost two load-bearing walls, with the new beams set flush in the ceiling. In its place: matched-grain walnut, a quartzite island holding a farmhouse sink, and a walk-in pantry that hides behind a wall of white cabinets.

Primary bathroom remodeling in McLean, VA: one open room with a frameless glass curbless shower, the tub deck under the window and the cherry vanity
Primary bath · McLean, VA

A McLean primary bath with a step-free shower

Three closed-off spaces for the tub, the toilet and the vanity were joined into one room. You now walk into the shower without a step, the drop-in tub sits in mitered Taj Mahal quartzite, and an 8-foot cherry vanity stands on tapered legs.

Kitchens in Arlington

Kitchen remodeling and kitchen design in Arlington

Arlington County draws its permit line at movement. New cabinets, a new range or a new dishwasher set where the old ones stood need no permit. Move the sink and its pipes, relocate a gas range, or open a wall to the dining room, and the job needs permits, because moving pipes, gas appliances and altering drywall all require them. Arlington County: residential permits

That makes the first design question a practical one: how much of your kitchen should move? A builder-grade kitchen often works on paper but wastes corners and counter space. Your designer measures the room, draws it in 3D on the showroom screen, and changes the drawing until the layout, storage and finishes are right for you.

Cost: Kitchens from about $20,000. Most of our full kitchen remodels fall between $32,000 and $60,000+. A range is a starting point, not a quote.

Bathrooms in Arlington

Bathroom remodeling in Arlington: what the county asks for

In Arlington, a new toilet, vanity or tub that lands exactly where the old one was counts as a same-location fixture swap, with no permit. Most bathroom remodels go further. Turning a tub into a walk-in shower usually means opening the wall and moving the valve or the drain, and the county requires permits for moving pipes and altering drywall. For any alteration, the application also carries the county's Asbestos Inspection and Awareness Form. County permit rules

Cost: Bathrooms from about $12,500. Most of our bathrooms fall between $20,000 and $60,000+. A range is a starting point, not a quote.

Also in Arlington: walk-in and tub-to-shower conversions (shower remodeling cost), finished basements with a bath or wet bar (basement remodeling cost), custom closets and pantries, and whole-home remodels.

Condos and townhouses

Remodeling an Arlington condo or townhouse

Arlington is not a county of detached houses alone. Only 41.3% of its homes are owner-occupied, and the county counts 125,612 housing units in all. The median owner home value is $895,000. Census QuickFacts Two of the six Arlington homeowners quoted on this page remodeled condos: Lori A. renovated a whole inherited condo, kitchen and bathroom included, and Alec G. rebuilt a bedroom-suite bath, where an old built-in tub became a walk-in shower with a shower head on each side and separate controls.

  • Building rules first: every condo building and many townhouse communities set their own renovation rules. We ask for yours before we plan, so the schedule and the materials fit them. In Alec G.'s building, tile could not be cut indoors, and our team planned around it from the start.
  • Debris: where a container fits, our own truck drops a 14-foot container on demo day and removes it as soon as demolition ends. Where the building or the street does not allow one, debris goes into a covered area during the day and a dump truck takes all of it away every evening, so nothing sits in the hallway or the lot overnight.
  • One contact: Sena, our sales director, stays your executive contact from the first call to the final walkthrough.

Permits and approvals

Arlington County permits and the Maywood historic district

Arlington County, through Permit Arlington

  • Arlington homes are permitted by Arlington County Inspection Services, not by a neighboring county. Applications go through Permit Arlington, and the Permit Arlington Center answers at 703-228-3800. Permit Arlington
  • The county publishes plan review targets: 5 business days for a residential alteration and 2 business days for Alteration Express, with about 2 more days for intake and return. These are county targets, not a promise from us. County review processes
  • Every alteration application includes an Asbestos Inspection and Awareness Form, and a historic property may need an approved Certificate of Appropriateness. County residential permits
  • Our permit department prepares the drawings and scope, files the building and trade permits, pays the county fees and schedules every inspection. Your project manager meets the inspector at your home.

Maywood Neighborhood Historic District

Arlington's Historical Affairs and Landmark Review Board (HALRB) reviews exterior changes, new construction and demolition in the county's local historic districts. The Maywood Neighborhood Historic District (1909) is the residential one; most of the other local districts are single sites. An interior kitchen or bath that changes nothing outside is mainly a permit question, but new windows, a bump-out or an addition in Maywood go to the board as well. County local historic districts

Your old kitchen

Where your old Arlington cabinets, tile and debris can go

  • Alexandria ReStore, the nearest: 869 South Pickett Street, Alexandria, (703) 360-6700, donations Monday to Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm at the back bay doors. Habitat's other store is in Chantilly. ReStore locations
  • What ReStores take: wood cabinets as a complete set with doors, appliances under 10 years old with no rust (dishwashers 5 years or newer, no wall ovens) and new tile in its original boxes, at least 2 boxes. Alexandria takes no countertops; Chantilly takes Corian, granite and Silestone by drop-off. Large donations can get a free pickup, usually booked 2 to 3 weeks out. ReStore donation rules
  • Arlington County drop-off: the inert materials site takes concrete and ceramic tile without metal, up to about 3 cubic yards, but no drywall, lumber or other construction debris. County inert materials page
  • Saving cabinets for a ReStore: tell your project manager at the final measurement which cabinets should be kept. Our crew removes them carefully on demo day, and they need a dry place to wait for the pickup, such as a garage, a storage unit or a spare room; in a condo, plan that space ahead. You book the pickup with the ReStore directly.
  • Everything else: goes into our own container or, where one is not allowed, onto our truck at the end of each day.

Check any contractor

Before you hire a remodeler in Arlington

In July 2025, Arlington County Police reminded residents to be careful with people going door to door who say they are county contractors, and advised keeping any deposit at or below 10%. Arlington County Police notice Virginia's licensing board gives the same guidance in more detail: hire a licensed contractor, get a written contract, keep the deposit to no more than 10% or $1,000 (30% for custom orders), and know you have 3 days to cancel a door-to-door sale. DPOR: hiring a contractor

In Virginia, a Class A license covers jobs of $150,000 and up, Class B covers $30,000 to $150,000, and Class C covers jobs over $1,000 and under $30,000. What Arlington homeowners say

Six Arlington homeowners on Google: two kitchens, two bathrooms, a whole condo and a whole home.

★★★★★★★★★★Google review

“We recently completed a full kitchen remodel with Fairfax Kitchen & Bath for our home in Arlington and are extremely happy with the results.

They transformed our builder-grade kitchen into a much more functional and beautiful space, improving the layout and maximizing storage. …

We especially appreciated how clean and professional they kept the job site, including providing a dedicated trash container throughout the project. …

Their 2-year labor warranty also gave us a lot of confidence in their work. We highly recommend Fairfax Kitchen & Bath to anyone looking for a reliable remodeling company.”

★★★★★★★★★★Google review

“We recently had Fairfax Kitchen and Bath remodel a bedroom suite bathroom in our Arlington, VA condo, and the results are fantastic. The project involved converting an old built-in bathtub into a beautiful walk-in shower. Since the shower was set between two walls, we requested dual shower heads - one on each side - with separate controls, and the team executed it perfectly.

They also added grab bars for safety and a recessed light inside the shower, which made a big difference in brightness. We replaced the flooring, vanity, countertop, lighting, and mirror. The old medicine cabinet was removed and replaced with a LED mirror, which we absolutely love.

Being a condo project, there were extra challenges, like not being able to cut tiles inside the building. But the team communicated this upfront, and the timeline was managed well. …

The craftsmanship and professionalism were top-notch. We’re very happy with the outcome and would definitely recommend Fairfax Kitchen and Bath for anyone planning a bathroom remodel!”

★★★★★★★★★★Google review

“We inherited a condo that was in rough shape and had to have the entire place renovated - bathroom, kitchen, floors and painting. It was an overwhelming task but our Project Designer (Sena) and our Project Manager (EG) took all the stress away. They were a pleasure to work with and the end product was amazing; I can’t believe it is the same place.”

★★★★★★★★★★Google review

“We worked with Fairfax Kitchen and Bath on a full redesign and renovation of our home in Arlington, VA - including the kitchen, bathrooms, and living areas. Fil Fernandes, our designer, has a real talent for design and helped bring our vision to life with beautiful results. The craftsmanship and quality of the work from the whole team were excellent. We’re really happy with how everything turned out.”

★★★★★★★★★★Google review

“We had a fantastic experience with Fairfax Kitchen Bath. We remodeled our kitchen in Arlington, VA, and could not be happier with the outcome and experience from start to finish. … We selected Fairfax Kitchen Bath after receiving estimates from several local design-build firms, and went with them because they clearly stood out with the most detailed upfront estimate and plan (and reasonable). The attention to detail carried through for the entire project. I would definitely use FKB again and highly recommend them to anyone doing a kitchen or bathroom remodel.”

★★★★★★★★★★Google review

“Clear and timely communication is important in multi-trade projects, balancing prime and subcontractors. Knowing that Ata would quickly and thoroughly respond to any question or request, provided great peace of mind. Thank you Fairfax Kitchen and Bath!”

Questions

Arlington remodeling questions

Do I need a permit to remodel a kitchen or bathroom in Arlington?

It depends on what moves. Arlington County says swapping cabinets, appliances or fixtures in the same location needs no permit. Moving pipes or a gas appliance, or altering drywall, does, and most full remodels do at least one of those. Alterations also need the county's Asbestos Inspection and Awareness Form. We file everything through Permit Arlington, pay the fees and meet every inspector, so you never have to deal with the county yourself.

Does the Maywood historic district change what I can do inside my house?

Arlington's Historical Affairs and Landmark Review Board reviews exterior changes, new buildings and demolition in the county's local historic districts, and Maywood is the residential one. A kitchen or bath that leaves the outside untouched is mostly a permit matter, but the county notes that historic properties may need an approved Certificate of Appropriateness, so we check your address before we draw anything. A new window, an addition or other exterior work is where the board comes in.

Do you remodel condo kitchens and bathrooms in Arlington?

Yes. Two of the Arlington homeowners who reviewed us did condo jobs: a whole condo with a new kitchen and bathroom, and a bedroom-suite bath where the built-in tub became a walk-in shower with two shower heads. Every building has its own renovation rules, so we ask for yours first. Where a container is not allowed, demolition debris stays in a covered area during the day and leaves on a truck every evening.

How much does a kitchen or bathroom remodel cost in Arlington?

Kitchens from about $20,000. Most of our full kitchen remodels fall between $32,000 and $60,000+. Bathrooms from about $12,500. Most of our bathrooms fall between $20,000 and $60,000+. A range is a starting point, not a quote. Your size, layout and selections set the final number, and a designer prices your plan after measuring your home.

Which showroom is closest to Arlington?

Two are close. Our Bethesda showroom at 4710 Bethesda Ave, Suite A, Bethesda, MD is about 7 miles from central Arlington in a straight line, and our Fairfax showroom at 9970 Main Street, Fairfax is about 11 miles. Both are open Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm, and you can meet a designer at either one, or at our Sterling showroom.

Where can old cabinets and tile go after an Arlington remodel?

The nearest Habitat for Humanity ReStore is in Alexandria, at 869 South Pickett Street. It takes complete sets of wood cabinets with their doors and new tile in its original boxes, but no countertops. Arlington County's inert materials drop-off takes concrete and ceramic tile, but not drywall, lumber or other construction debris. Everything else from demolition leaves in our own container or truck.
