Our work in McLean

Two McLean projects: an open walnut kitchen and a curbless primary bath

Kitchen remodeling in McLean, VA: the new kitchen open to the family room, with a farmhouse sink in the walnut island
Walnut kitchen · McLean, VA

Walnut kitchen: two load-bearing walls out, a hidden pantry

The old cherry kitchen was closed off from the family room and the dining room. Two load-bearing walls came out, two engineered, steel-reinforced beams now sit recessed in the ceiling, and the new walnut and white kitchen has a farmhouse sink in a quartzite island, a new triple window and a walk-in pantry hidden behind a wall of white cabinets.

Primary bath · McLean, VA

Primary bath: closed rooms opened, a curbless shower

A tub room, a toilet room and a vanity area, each closed off, became one bright primary bath: a curbless shower about 68 by 65 inches, a drop-in tub in mitered Taj Mahal quartzite, an 8-foot cherry vanity on tapered legs and a marble floor with a mosaic rug.

In Fairfax County, the plumbing, electrical and mechanical permits for a remodel are filed as "child" permits of the residential alteration (building) permit. County alteration permit page On the McLean kitchen, the county issued the building permit for the kitchen remodel and the removal of the load-bearing walls about 4 weeks after we applied. Your designer plans every room together, and your project manager runs the build from demolition to the final walkthrough.

Kitchens in McLean

Kitchen remodeling in McLean: what needs a Fairfax County permit

Fairfax County draws the line clearly. A kitchen renovation needs a permit; replacing only the cabinets and countertops does not. A new or moved sink needs a plumbing permit, new lights, outlets or a wall oven need an electrical permit, and a range hood with new ductwork needs a mechanical permit. Fairfax County: does my project need a permit?

The difference matters as soon as a plan goes past a cabinet swap: moving the island, adding a ducted hood or opening a wall to the family room all bring permits. In April 2026 the county cut its residential Fast Track review from 5 business days to 1 for non-complex projects, including minor interior alterations; whether a kitchen qualifies is the county's call. Fast Track notice

Cost: in our sold jobs, a cabinets, counters and backsplash refresh starts at about $20,000, and most full kitchen remodels in the same layout fall between $32,000 and $60,000+. Size, layout changes and your selections set the price, and there is no ceiling; we have built kitchens past $200,000. A range is a starting point, not a quote.

Bathrooms in McLean

Bathroom remodeling in McLean: plumbing permits and timing

The county treats a bathroom remodel like a kitchen: the remodel needs a permit, but a new vanity, tile or flooring on its own does not. The moment a sink, tub, shower or toilet moves, or a new one is added, a plumbing permit joins the job. In a tub-to-shower conversion, the permit question usually comes down to whether the drain moves; we answer it on the first visit.

Cost and timing: most of our bathrooms fall between $20,000 and $60,000+. A bath that keeps its layout takes 3 to 4 weeks of construction; a primary suite with layout changes takes 4 to 8 weeks, after 2 to 6 weeks of design. Permits add time. Typical, not a promise.

HOAs and condos

Rules vary by subdivision and condo building. On most jobs, our own truck drops a 14-foot container on demo day and takes it away as soon as demolition is done, so no debris sits in front of your garage for the association to write you about. Some homes have no room for a container, a road that can't take one, or condo rules that don't allow it. There, demolition debris goes into a dedicated, covered area during the day, and a dump truck hauls all of it away at the end of each day, so nothing stays overnight.

Your old kitchen

Where your old McLean kitchen can go

  • Habitat DC-NOVA's ReStores: Alexandria (869 South Pickett Street) and Chantilly (4311 Walney Road), donations Monday to Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm. They take wood cabinets as a complete set with doors, appliances under 10 years old (dishwashers 5 years or newer, no wall ovens) and new tile in its original boxes (at least 2 boxes). Alexandria takes no countertops; Chantilly takes Corian, granite and Silestone by drop-off. Free pickup for large donations, usually 2 to 3 weeks out. What ReStores accept
  • County pickup: Fairfax County's special pickup is only for county collection customers and takes no construction debris. Special pickup rules
  • Landfill: the county trucks home-renovation debris to a landfill in King George County, and the Furnace Road entrance to the I-95 complex closed for good on October 10, 2026. County disposal notice
  • Donating your cabinets to a ReStore: our crews can take your old cabinets out and set them aside for a ReStore pickup, but it takes planning. Tell your project manager at the final measurement, because once demolition starts the cabinets need a place to wait, such as a garage, a basement or another dry room. If the ReStore comes two weeks after demo, they wait two weeks. Outside, they sit in the rain, and your HOA and neighbors will see them. You book the pickup with the ReStore yourself; we don't schedule it.
  • Our container: everything else from demolition goes into our own 14-foot container, removed as soon as demolition is done. Where a container won't fit, debris is hauled away at the end of each day.

Plan it before demo: ReStore pickups are usually booked 2 to 3 weeks out, so call the ReStore as soon as your start date is set and ask for a date close to demo day. Then tell your project manager at the final measurement which cabinets go and where they will wait.

★★★★★★★★★★Google review

“I just experienced a master bathroom remodel by Fairfax Kitchen and Bath in my McLean, VA home and I’m pleased with the results. They provided efficient project management and a high-quality service, ensuring a smooth and satisfactory renovation experience. Highly recommended 👏”

★★★★★★★★★★Houzz review

“We recently purchased a home in McLean, VA, and the basement was unfinished. We wanted to complete it before moving in, and Fairfax Kitchen and Bath made that possible. They started the design process even before our closing date, using the measurements we provided. Right after closing, they came out for final measurements, rushed the material order, and began construction early to meet our move-in timeline.

The entire process went smoothly. The team was incredibly understanding and supportive. Anytime we had a hiccup, they were right there with solutions. They handled everything; from permits to ordering, delivery, inspections, and more. We always felt we were in good hands.”

Questions

McLean remodeling questions

Do I need a permit for a kitchen or bathroom remodel in McLean?

Yes for a remodel, no for a simple swap. McLean is part of Fairfax County, and the county says a kitchen renovation or a bathroom remodel needs a permit. Replacing cabinets, countertops, a vanity, tile or flooring in the same spot (what contractors call a "pull and replace") does not need a permit on its own, and neither does paint. Moving or adding a sink, tub, shower or toilet adds a plumbing permit, and new lights, outlets or a range hood with new ductwork add electrical or mechanical permits. We handle the whole permit process, from the building and trade permits to the county fees and every inspection, so you never deal with the county.

Does the Langley Fork historic district affect an interior remodel?

Fairfax County's Architectural Review Board reviews exterior work that needs a building permit inside a historic overlay district such as Langley Fork. The county's guidance does not address interior work, so a kitchen or bath that changes nothing outside is mainly a permit question. Exterior changes and additions that need a building permit are where the board comes in.

How much does a kitchen remodel cost in McLean?

In our sold jobs, a cabinets, counters and backsplash refresh starts at about $20,000, and most full kitchen remodels in the same layout fall between $32,000 and $60,000+. Size, layout changes and your selections set the price, and there is no ceiling; we have built kitchens past $200,000. A range is a starting point, not a quote.

How long does a bathroom remodel take in McLean?

A bathroom that keeps the same layout takes 3 to 4 weeks of construction; a larger primary bath with layout changes takes 4 to 8 weeks. Design usually takes 2 to 6 weeks before that, and the Fairfax County permit adds time. These are typical times from our jobs, not a promise.

Where can I donate old kitchen cabinets near McLean?

Habitat DC-NOVA's two ReStores are in Alexandria (869 South Pickett Street) and Chantilly (4311 Walney Road). They take wood cabinets as a complete set with doors, and offer free pickup for large donations, usually 2 to 3 weeks out. The Alexandria store does not take countertops.
