One Chevy Chase home, two projects: first the kitchen, then the primary bath
Designer Sena planned both rooms with the homeowners, and our crew built them. Each story is told in full on its own page.

The dining room wall came out
The old all-white kitchen sat behind a tiled wall with a doorway to the dining room. We checked what the wall carried; it was not a bearing wall, so it came out without a beam. Now St. Martin cabinets in white run to the ceiling, a dark Peppercorn island holds the farmhouse sink, the dishwasher and a microwave drawer, and blue zellige climbs to a white hood our crew built, with new ducting and make-up air.

Then they came back for the primary bath
Sena was drawing this bath before the kitchen was finished. A wall-hung sink and a curtained shower stall gave way to a walk-in shower lined floor to ceiling in Dekton slab panels behind frameless glass, a 67-inch double-ended freestanding tub beside it, an oak double vanity with gold Kohler Artifacts faucets and a marble basketweave floor. The closet next door was rebuilt too.

What your municipality asks for
The County and WSSC permits are the same everywhere in Chevy Chase. What changes from one street to the next is the town, village or section on top: interior work, dumpsters, work hours and trees.
Everywhere in Chevy Chase: Montgomery County and WSSC
- Building and electrical: Montgomery County's Department of Permitting Services (DPS) issues them in every part of Chevy Chase. An interior alteration needs a permit; installing or replacing cabinets, floor coverings and bathroom caulking do not. Work that needs no permit must still meet the code. DPS permit list
- Plumbing and gas: WSSC Water permits, through WSSC ePermitting, and in Montgomery County most plumbing must be done by a WSSC-licensed plumber or gasfitter. WSSC for homeowners
- Order of inspections: DPS will not do its close-in inspection until WSSC has approved the rough-in plumbing; the master plumber of record schedules the WSSC inspections. DPS inspection guide
- County fees: for alterations, $0.78 per square foot in the fiscal year that began July 1, 2026, plus a filing fee of half the permit fee or $329.59, whichever is greater. DPS fees, FY27
- Where it happens: DPS's "Apply & ePay" portal, with plans uploaded through ePlans; the office is at 2425 Reedie Drive in Wheaton, 240-777-0311. DPS residential alterations Our permit department files the permits and books the County inspections.

Kitchen remodeling in Chevy Chase: opening up an older house
Chevy Chase was developed as a planned streetcar suburb between 1892 and 1930, Chevy Chase Lake plan and in the Chevy Chase home in our story the kitchen sat behind a tiled wall, reached from the dining room through a doorway. Opening that wall was the heart of the plan. Before any wall comes down, we check what it carries; that one was not a bearing wall, so no beam was needed, and only the wiring inside it moved.
On the permit side, the County puts new cabinets on its no-permit list but an interior alteration on the permit side, and moving a sink into an island is WSSC plumbing work. DPS permit list A bigger hood can mean new ducting and make-up air, as it did in that kitchen. Your designer measures the room at home, then builds the plan in 3D at our Bethesda showroom, where you can open the drawers and hold the quartz and tile next to each other.
Cost: Kitchens from about $20,000. Most of our full kitchen remodels fall between $32,000 and $60,000+. A range is a starting point, not a quote.

Bathrooms in Chevy Chase
Bathroom remodeling in Chevy Chase: WSSC first, then the County
A Chevy Chase bath runs on two permits in a set order. The plumbing belongs to WSSC Water and a WSSC-licensed plumber, and the County's DPS will not close the walls with its close-in inspection until WSSC has passed the rough-in plumbing. DPS inspection guide WSSC
In the Chevy Chase primary bath we built, the walls came open to the masonry, the old drain and supply pipes were replaced, and a heating duct was moved so the freestanding tub could sit where it was planned. Full-height Dekton slab panels, set by our crew one at a time, left the shower with very few joints.
Cost: Bathrooms from about $12,500. Most of our bathrooms fall between $20,000 and $60,000+. A range is a starting point, not a quote.
Also in Chevy Chase: tub-to-shower conversions (shower remodeling cost), finished basements (basement remodeling cost), custom closets and whole-home remodels.

Historic districts
Remodeling inside a Chevy Chase historic district
The Chevy Chase Village Historic District covers 327 properties, from Chevy Chase Circle north to the south side of Bradley Lane, between Brookville Road and Cedar Parkway. Its period of significance starts in 1892, and its houses run from Colonial Revival and Shingle to Tudor Revival, Italian Renaissance and Craftsman. For a kitchen or bath, the key line is plain: "Interior alterations, changes, etc. are not subject to review under the Historic Preservation Ordinance." Montgomery Planning
- Exterior changes: additions, porch enclosures, new exterior materials, window sash, removing shutters or painting masonry need a Historic Area Work Permit, filed through DPS. Interior work is on Montgomery Planning's list of changes that do not involve the Historic Preservation Commission. Historic Area Work Permits
- In the Village: when a historic permit is needed, the Village issues its own permit only after it. Village permitting guide
- Hawkins Lane: a smaller historic district off Jones Bridge Road near Connecticut Avenue, a Black kinship community founded by James H. Hawkins, who bought 3 acres in 1893; it has 15 houses, and its guidelines say historic permits are not needed for interior work. Hawkins Lane guidelines
So a remodel that stays inside the walls goes through the County permit like anywhere else. A new window, a bump-out or an addition is where historic review starts, and we look up your address before the design does.

Questions
Chevy Chase remodeling questions
Do I need a permit to remodel a kitchen or bathroom in Chevy Chase?
Almost always, from Montgomery County. Its Department of Permitting Services lists interior alterations and electrical work as needing a permit and sends plumbing to WSSC Water; new cabinets, floor coverings and replacing an outlet in the same spot are on its no-permit list. That is the same everywhere in Chevy Chase. On top of it, each town, village and section has its own rules, mostly for exterior work, dumpsters and trees. Our permit department files the County and WSSC permits and books the County inspections; the WSSC inspections are scheduled by the licensed master plumber of record.
Does my town or village have to approve an interior remodel?
In most of Chevy Chase, no. Chevy Chase Village, Section 5, Martin's Additions and North Chevy Chase each say in writing that work only inside the house needs no local building permit. The Town of Chevy Chase, Section 3 and Chevy Chase View do not list interior-only work on their permit forms, so we confirm with their staff before we start. Every one of them still has rules for dumpsters and storage units.
Where can the dumpster go during a Chevy Chase remodel?
Usually on your own driveway. Chevy Chase Village, Section 3, Section 5 and Chevy Chase View all keep dumpsters off their streets, and most municipalities ask for a permit first: $30 for 90 days in the Village, $50 plus an escrow (a bond or a $1,500 check) in Section 3, and a $50 fee with a $500 bond in the Town of Chevy Chase, per its guide. We check where your municipality allows our container before demo day.
My house is in the Chevy Chase Village Historic District. Does that affect a kitchen or bath?
Not the inside. Montgomery Planning's amendment for the district says interior alterations are not subject to review under the Historic Preservation Ordinance, and a Historic Area Work Permit is for exterior changes such as additions, porch enclosures, window sash or new exterior materials. A kitchen or bath that stays inside the walls goes through the County permit like any other. If the plan changes the outside, the Village waits for that historic permit before it issues its own.
How much does a kitchen or bathroom remodel cost in Chevy Chase?
Kitchens from about $20,000. Most of our full kitchen remodels fall between $32,000 and $60,000+. Bathrooms from about $12,500. Most of our bathrooms fall between $20,000 and $60,000+. A range is a starting point, not a quote. The size of the room, the layout and your selections set your own number, and a designer prices your plan after measuring your home.
Which of your showrooms is closest to Chevy Chase?
Bethesda. Our showroom at 4710 Bethesda Ave, Suite A, Bethesda, MD is less than a mile from central Chevy Chase in a straight line, and it is open Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 5 pm. You are welcome at our Fairfax and Sterling showrooms too, and a designer can meet you at any of the three.
Where can old cabinets and fixtures go after a Chevy Chase remodel?
Two reuse options are close. Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland's ReStore at 1029 East Gude Drive in Rockville takes building materials, appliances, cabinets, windows and plumbing fixtures, with pickup for large items. Community Forklift in Edmonston takes cabinets with their doors attached. The Town of Chevy Chase and Chevy Chase View curbside pickups take no construction debris, so everything else from demolition leaves with our crew.
