A Complex Kitchen Makeover Made Simple for a Ashburn, VA Homeowner
Ashburn, VA is a city in Loudoun County and is home to over 43,500 people. It’s about 30 miles away from Washington D.C., making it a part of the Washington metro area. This town wasn’t always known as Ashburn – back in the 1800s, it was called a variation of names, including Farmwell, Farmwell Station and Old Farmwell. It was named after a local mansion that was owned by a man named George Lee III. The name Farmwell originally referred to the 1,236 acre plantation that he inherited from Thomas Ludwell Lee II, his father.
It wasn’t until 1841, when a 580 acre tract of land was purchased by a Quaker lawyer by the name of John Janney, when the property was renamed Ashburn Farm. The name stuck around after he sold the place. The name Ashburn is believed to stem from family friends named Ashburn.
Things to Do in Ashburn
Just as in most towns in the USA, there are plenty of things to see in do in Ashburn. Depending on what you consider is fun, you may enjoy a number of attractions in the area. For one, there’s the iFLY Loudoun, which offers an amazing experience for anyone who is dare devilish. Here, you can enjoy flying like a sky diver over a huge anti-gravity fan.
Those who are looking to enjoy a quiet afternoon in the park with family, then Ashburn Park is worthy of checking out. It offers beautiful scenic views of nature, which can be explored along its walking paths. Afterward, you and friends can hang out for a couple of round beers at the Old Ox Brewery, or even head over to one of the two movie theaters in the area.
A Unique Design Challenge
Fairfax Kitchen and Bath was contacted by a retired couple in Ashburn, VA. The two were looking to update kitchen with more storage space, which it was presently lacking in. They were also interested in upgrading their wooden counters for slabs of granite stone. The lady of the house really wanted a kitchen that had high-end finishes, and now that they were retired, the two were moving forward with that vision.
The kitchen overlooked beautiful white oak trees in their backyard. The problem was that the space was designed in a way that allowed them to enjoy it. A kitchen island was also desired by the couple, also using granite stone. This would enable more seating space for family, friends and visitors.
Coming Up with a Solution
The biggest challenge we faced was trying to determine how to deal with the beam that ran from one end of the ceiling to the other. This couldn’t be removed for structural purposes. The idea we came up with was to incorporate a tray ceiling with decorative molding. At first, the couple wasn’t sure how it would look and whether they’d like it. However, once they saw the result, they were very pleased.
A Happy Couple
We ended up having to relocate the kitchen window and installed a new window seat, so the couple could enjoy the beautiful backyard views. Since the two complained about a lack of space, we implemented a full pantry with pullout drawers, taller cabinets, a big kitchen island and a decorative glass cabinet that really brought flare and functionality to the kitchen design. A Cambria granite countertop was used for both the kitchen counters and kitchen island. The final touches were the appliances, which were replaced with elegant models. The additional storage, preparation and eating space was very pleasant for the couple.
With all the work involved, it took one and a half weeks to complete the installations and remodeling. Our licensed professionals provided meticulous attention to detail, which could be seen in all the materials and designs we implemented.
At the end of it all, the retired couple was very happy with the work performed by Fairfax Kitchen and Bath.
Completing the Project
Permits were required to complete this project, which had a waiting period of about one week. However, we got started on other aspects of the kitchen remodel right away, so no time was wasted. We began with removing all the furniture, including the appliances, counters and cabinets. Everything was to be updated, so a complete overhaul was necessary. We made sure to cover the floors, so that they wouldn’t become damaged by the hustle and bustle.
Our work was all done within the week, allowing us to get started on relocating the window and adding a window seat once we got the permit approved. Everything was seamless, our experts began with installing the kitchen island, cabinets, pantry and the countertops last.
