How to Make the Most of Tiny Kitchen Remodeling

How to Make the Most of Tiny Kitchen Remodeling

One of the best things about kitchen remodeling is making space. Failing that, it can make it look bigger given the right design and layout. This is especially helpful if you have a tiny house and even tinier kitchen with no chance of expanding it.
Many older apartments and condominium units share this problem. Some designs are better than others are, but in most cases, you must contend with poor space management that space appliances unevenly and without consideration for maximizing natural light. You also have outdated cabinets and odd protrusions that make the kitchen seem closed in and crowded.
Kitchen remodeling can correct these deficiencies with a little clever designing and a reliable contractor to execute it properly. You will probably have to change the layout of the kitchen, replace old, inefficient, and mostly bulky appliances, and take out a few things. Here are some tips on how to make the most of your tiny kitchen remodeling.

Embrace the light

If you are lucky, you will have more than one source of natural light, such as a window and a skylight. For most people, however, one small window is the norm. If that is the case, make your kitchen look immediately brighter and bigger by removing anything in the way of letting light in from the outside. It may be a refrigerator, or maybe a range hood. Whatever it is, put it somewhere else. You might also want to put in something reflective such as gleaming white granite or quartz countertops and full backsplash to maximize the brightness.

Move it around

Before making that first swing, plan the future layout of your kitchen with a 3D designer. You can squeeze in all the appliances you need if you plan it carefully. Take down the measurements of all the appliances you have (or plan to buy) and include it in the design.
Make sure you consider your countertop and storage space when making these plans. You can often squeeze out more of both by going with shallower countertops and cabinets that go all the way to the ceiling. If you have a kitchenwith two walls, put countertops and kitchen cabinets along the length of both walls.

You may have to move your kitchen sink to one corner of the room instead of smack in the middle to make room for all your appliances. Sinks are tricky because once you put it in, you can’t simply move it. Experiment with different areas to put your sink, cooktop, and refrigerator (keeping in mind the kitchen triangle) to find out the most efficient layout. Only when you are satisfied with the design should you start with your kitchen remodeling.

In some cases, an awkwardly placed door may keep you from putting in counters and cabinets. It may be better to remove the door altogether, move the entrance to a more strategic position, or tear down that wall to open the space. You may be able to get the access you want by simply shifting the entrance a few inches.

Waste not, want not

Many tiny kitchen designs maximize horizontal and vertical space so not an inch is wasted. However, many kitchens have lowered ceilings or hollow soffits that serve no real purpose other than to hide a few pipes.
You may want to check if you can claw back some height for your kitchen by removing or moving up a lowered ceiling. If you have pipes, you can construct a more compact hiding space for them or leave them out for an industrial look.
You would be amazed at how much larger a few inches of overhead space can make your kitchen feel.

Look for bargains

While you should always get the best you can afford, you can get that at a lower price by simply making some smart choices. You can save a bundle by choosing last year ‘s model for your new refrigerator or stove or going for RTA instead of custom cabinets.
Most stores also have periodic sale events throughout the year, so shop for stuff you need at one of those as much as possible. You can score as much as 75% at some clearance sales, so that means you have more money for other things for your kitchen remodeling.

Hide and seek

The problem with most tiny kitchens is they inevitably look like a showroom for an appliance store. Avoid this look by camouflaging your appliances behind cabinet doors or choosing colors that will blend in with the overall design of the kitchen.

Go up

The idea of leading the eye up is to give the room an appearance of height. You can do this by painting a wall a bright color or putting in a full backsplash. This not only opens the room, but also reflects light to brighten it up.
You can also achieve the look of height by putting in floor to ceiling tall cabinets that the eye can follow without interruption. You can use these as a pantry or to store almost anything you need in the kitchen. You can put it in one or both sides of a long counter, making them easily accessible.
