Bathroom Remodel for Chantilly Home

kitchen bathroom remodeling chantilly vaThe census-designated place known as Chantilly can be found in the western portion of Fairfax County in Virginia. Back in the 1700s, it was home to a number of plantations, one of which was Chantilly Plantation, after which the CDP is named.

The Chantilly Plantation was owned by married couple Charles Calvert Stuart and Cornelia Lee Turberville. She had inherited a portion of Leeton from her father in 1817 on which she and her husband built Chantilly Plantation. It was named after the plantation in Westmoreland County owned by her grandfather, Richard Henry Lee, who incidentally is a sigher of the Declaration of Independence. That in turn was named after the Chateau de Chantilly in France. The manor house of the Chantilly Plantation was burned to the ground by federal troops during the Civil War, and only one building has remained intact. It is believed to be the overseer's quarters. Cornelia Stuart sold the property after the war because of debt.

Chantilly is about 25 miles from Washington, D.C., and hedged by Centreville, Herndon. Reston, and Fairfax. The development of the CDP was slow but steady, particularly after the construction of the Little River Turnpike, otherwise known as State Route 236, in 1806 which made Winchester accessible. However, it had a surge of development in the 1980s when people started building residential and commercial areas where there only used to be farmland. Today, Chantilly is a pleasant upper-class suburb with a population of 23,039 people that are apparently doing quite well. The median household income in Chantilly is $118,078, nearly double the state median of $66,262.

Among the public personalities associated with Chantilly include the author Kaye Dacus, soprano Alessandra Marc, and poet Stephen Tomajczyk. Sports figures include football coach Chris Beatty, and professional football players Bhawoh Joe, Joe Koshansky, Jimmy Martin, Eddie Royal, and Evan Royster.

Things to Do Around Chantilly

When in Chantilly, you should make a point of visiting the home of northern Virginia's first congressional representative and Robert E. Lee's uncle Richard Bland Lee. Formerly the Sully Plantation, it is now the Sully Historic Site, and has been kept as it had been in the 18th Century. If you feel like playing Scarlett or Rhett, this would be a good place to pretend it's Tara.

You can also climb the observation tower of the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, which is part of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum. From this vantage point, you can watch the air traffic at Dulles Airport, and explore the history of aviation and space travel.

Bathroom revamp

The clients were a young couple that had recently moved to Chantilly, and had purchased a 1,200-square foot condominium built in 2005. It was a contemporary three-bedroom, two-bathroom unit with hardwood floors, modern fireplace, and granite counters. However, the clients did not like the bathrooms, which were utilitarian to the extreme, done completely in white ceramic tile. They contacted us to do a complete bathroom remodel for their master bathroom. We came over to see what we could do.

There was actually nothing wrong with the bathroom even though it was 12 years old. It was well-maintained and very clean. It was quite generic, however, almost like a public bathroom, except it had a sunken tub. The clients didn't want the tub, but had no real idea for anything else in the design of the bathroom. We offered the services of our staff designers to present them with some ideas. The clients seemed almost relieved to leave it all to us. We made our measurements and promised to give them studies in a few days.

Design presentation

We at Fairfax Kitchen & Bath take special pride in the creativity and attention to detail our staff designers give to bathroom designs. We presented three separate layouts to the client, ranging from contemporary to dramatic. They preferred the contemporary design, which featured an all glass shower enclosure with Kohler Shower Heads and Bodyspray fixtures, Ancient Bath tile wall from Mosaics, and an Adler vanity with white Carrara marble top from Hardware Resources. It was an excellent choice given the design of the master bedroom. We gave them a quote for the remodel, and a timeline of four weeks, from demolition to finishing. The clients agreed and we scheduled the start for the following week. We did request the clients to move to one of the other bedrooms as the demolition was going to make it impossible for the clients to sleep comfortably for the duration.

The remodel went as predicted. The underlying plumbing and structure of the bathroom was sound, so there were no unexpected issues that would have delayed the work. The biggest worry was a delay in the delivery of the vanity because it was out of stock, but it came just in time. The clients observed the work sporadically, and made some minor changes to the placement of certain accessories, but nothing that couldn't be easily accommodated. We finished the project within the four-week schedule, which was very satisfying.

Post construction

The project went much more smoothly than most bathroom remodels. In many cases, problems with the plumbing can cause costly delays for both us and the clients. However, because the building was relatively new and had an excellent maintenance service, we had no issues with the plumbing at all. The clients loved the new master bathroom, and made plans to have the second bathroom remodeled in a similar fashion.

Preparation is the key

There is always a chance that some unexpected issues will arise during a bathroom remodel. Because we constantly coordinated with the clients and were meticulous in our inspection and design, we were able to minimize that risk to almost nothing.
Contact us if you need help with your bathroom or kitchen remodel. It is what we do best. You should also ask us about our packages. You'll love it.
