From Cramped to Spacious: An Alexandria Kitchen Remodeling Story
The beautiful town of Alexandria, Virginia is dubbed Old Town for good reason – it is a historic city that has been well-preserved. It’s also an independent city, which means it doesn’t rely on the county to take care of it. As of 2010, it had a population near 140,000, making it pleasantly small, but not too tiny. You can find this community situated along the western bank of Potomac river. It was expected to grow in population by 10,000 people by 2015. It’s a steady growing city that is worth looking into if you’re looking to buy real estate.
Old Town Alexandria is anything but, offering plenty of things to do during the day and night. It can be found in the heart of the city and was home to notables like George Washington. The cobblestone streets and brick sidewalks give it 18th century flare that you won’t find in many other places.
You can also find an assortment of great restaurants with beautiful waterfront views, like Blackwall Hitch and Bilbo Baggins Restaurant. Find an excellent selection of American and international food options to choose from.
There are also plenty of shops and boutiques to go to for everything from clothes and shoes to household items. Art enthusiasts may also be interested in attending the art galleries in the city. Other things to check out include boat cruises and historical sites.
Small Kitchens Aren’t Motivating
This is especially true for one of our customers, who contacted us about his very small kitchen. Our client and his wife lived in their home for four years. He states that before they moved to Lancaster, his wife really loved to cook. But after about a year of living here, she resorted to cooking smaller, quicker meals and eating out more often. He blames this on the size of the kitchen, which is a bit too cramped to do the type of cooking his wife once loved to do.
So in order to appease his wife, and his stomach, he decided to surprise her with a brand new kitchen makeover. After reviewing their home during the initial consultation, we all agreed that walls would have to be knocked down in order to do the kitchen any real justice.
Luckily, there was a dining room right next to it that they rarely used. This wall was to be knocked down and the room stripped of its current carpeting and replaced with tile. The new size of the kitchen would be more than twice as big, giving more room to design something spectacular.
Our Client Was Right
After the client’s wife saw the updated and resized kitchen, she was amazed. She was out of town during the duration of the project and had no idea that this was taking place. Our client has written us after the fact and let us know that his wife has really taken a liking to the kitchen and spends hours in it some days. The fine detail we included gave flare and the layout made it simple to navigate for cleaning and cooking.
Completing the Project
There was a lot of work that had to be done, and permits to obtain to ensure we were able to successfully knock down the one wall and open up the kitchen into a nice-sized space. Once we obtained the proper permits and reviewed the blueprints, our experts got to work. We stripped up the floors in both the kitchen and the dining area, then took out all of the counters and cabinets.
The backsplash that was currently there was also removed and was replaced with tile that matched the new flooring. The countertops of choice was a beautiful sandy-colored granite slab. Now that the kitchen was larger, we were able to include a small kitchen island, which could be used for prepping and eating for two. There was enough space after the fact to include a kitchen table to accommodate guests as well.
The color of the tile chosen was a mysterious stormy black, which went great with the granite countertops. The backsplash was placed around the sink and stove areas to protect the walls and add style.
Our client also wanted new light and sink fixtures installed, which was done by simply replacing the elements that already existed. The entire project took about three weeks to complete, given that we had to wait a week for the permits to be issued.
